钦佩的运动员
One successful sportsperson I truly admire1 is Yao Ming, the former Chinese basketball player. Even though he retired from professional basketball years ago, he remains one of the most influential athletes2 in China. I first learned about him when I was a child, mainly through NBA highlights and sports news. He played for the Houston Rockets in the United States and was famous for his exceptional height, skill, and calm style of play. At 2.29 metres tall, he certainly had a physical advantage, but what impressed me more was that3 he was not simply a tall player. He had excellent footwork, a soft shooting touch, and a strong understanding of teamwork. From interviews and documentaries4, he seems to be intelligent, humble, and surprisingly witty in real life. He does not come across as5 someone who enjoys showing off. Instead, he speaks thoughtfully and has used his public influence to promote basketball among young people and raise awareness of wildlife protection. His greatest achievement was becoming the first Chinese player to establish himself as a true NBA star. He was selected for the NBA All-Star team several times and was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. More importantly, he opened the door for many Chinese people to follow international basketball. For me, Yao Ming is admirable not only because of his sporting success6, but also because he has represented China with dignity and made a positive difference after retirement.
