I'd like to talk about my aunt, who is probably the most enthusiastic home gardener¹ I know. She lives in a small house with a sunny backyard, which she has gradually turned into a beautiful and productive garden. She grows a wide variety of plants². In spring and summer, her garden is full of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and chili peppers. She also grows several herbs, including mint, basil, and rosemary, which she often uses in her cooking. Apart from edible plants³, she is especially fond of flowers. Roses, sunflowers, and lavender are some of her favourites, and they make the garden colourful and fragrant. She takes care of the plants in a very patient and environmentally friendly way. For example, she starts some seeds in small pots indoors⁴ before moving the young plants outside. She makes her own compost from vegetable peelings and fallen leaves, rather than relying heavily on chemical fertilisers. Every morning, she checks the soil, waters the plants if necessary, removes weeds, and looks for signs of insects or disease. She has also set up a simple rainwater collection barrel, so she can water the garden without wasting tap water. I think she loves gardening because it gives her a strong sense of peace and achievement⁵. After a busy day, she can switch off from daily worries by digging in the soil or pruning a plant. She is also genuinely delighted when she picks fresh vegetables that she has grown herself and turns them into a meal for the family. In her view, gardening is not just a hobby; it is a rewarding way to stay active, eat healthily, and feel connected to nature.
